A Letter To My Mamá

Mamá,

Thank you for being such a hard worker. For busting your butt and working at times 24/7 just so that my sister and I could have everything we needed and wanted. For showing us that working moms have it tough but super working moms could accomplish just about anything. I’ll admit there were times where I really thought you had super human powers for making it all work.

For taking us to work with you after school and sticking us in “the office/homework room” for a few hours while dad got off of work to pick us up. Wow – What a way to save babysitting money and get us to do our homework! You were always so good at finding solutions and saving money. For teaching me how to make good meals with very little money. For making a flea market outfit look so amazing that everyone thought you clearly paid big bucks for. For making us lunch after school no matter how busy your work schedule was.

Thank you for always keeping up with family traditions and teaching us about our culture. I hope my kids and grandkids will follow suit as these are some of the happiest moments with you. Although, as a kid I always complained about it.

Thank you for letting me quit ballet after a few weeks of not caring for it. But most importantly, thank you for always sticking up for my little sister and I when other kids and teachers were not so nice. “be nice but stick up for yourself!” you’d say.

Thank you for your positivity and strength. For holding our family together during all the hard times. For always pointing out the good in everything. Thank you for calming me down during my crazy college years of nervous breakdowns. For making me feel important and engraving in me that I could do and be just about anybody I wanted to if I just worked really hard at it and was passionate about it.

For not paying for my college. It taught me to work harder in high school so that I could get into a good school. For believing in me and teaching me that I could juggle work and school. Thanks for being a “luchona.” Fighting for what you believe in and not letting Cancer get the best of you! You are one tough cookie.

For your unapologetic loud laugh that embarrassed my sister and I as kids. But now I realize it was just you being you. Love you for that!

For teaching me how to be a better mother. I don’t know what I’d do without all of your support and never ending advice.

Thanks for your creativity. You are seriously so talented. I hope one day I can be nearly as talented as you. And lastly but not least, thank you for teaching us God’s love and to believe in him. Nunca nos desamparara!

I have some serious shoes to fill in (even though you wear a tiny size 5!).

Happy Birthday Mom! Te quiero con todo mi corazón!

Gladys

My mother terrified of my driving skills. In fact, she still is. And yes – picture taken with a TMNT camera. Loved the intrusive logo. 🙂
