Butterfly Jungle San Diego Zoo Safari ParkSpring is just around the corner and what better way to kick things off than to see hundreds of butterflies in one place fluttering all around you? If you’re planning a trip to San Diego, California or if you’re a Southern California resident, be sure to visit the San Diego Safari Park and their Butterfly Jungle. The exhibit opens March 10 and runs through April 15. That means it’s only open for about a month or so once a year. But before you head out to the park, be sure to read our short list of tips on how to make this experience ultra magical for you and your family.
Wear Bright Colors
Apparently, wearing bright colored clothing (especially yellow) attracts butterflies. They might mistake your bright outfit for a flower and head your way or even land on you.
Grab A Watermelon Cup
Be sure to grab some watermelon cups for sale outside the exhibit before you head into the exhibit. Butterflies absolutely love watermelon.
Get There Early
I know, so hard to get out the door with little ones but if you can plan ahead, getting there first thing in the morning and even better, during a weekday will help with the long lines spring break lines. Updated: This year, we went later in the day after 3pm over the weekend as we’re members and were surprised to see all the entertainment the zoo provided to the kids while waiting. The lines were much shorter later in the day as well.
*VIP pass
If you can’t get there early or go during a weekday, buy a VIP pass. It basically gets you to the front of the Butterfly Jungle line. Trust me, standing in a long line with little ones can be tough.
*Butterfly Jungle Breakfast
Enjoy an early morning breakfast buffet at the Safari Park and be one of the first to get a morning viewing of the butterflies. For reservations, call 619-718-3000 or book online at sdzsafaripark.org/dining-
*Butterfly and Friends Behind the Scenes Tour
Enjoy an exclusive early morning, guided tour of the butterfly jungle before the public arrives. Your guide will also take you to see some feathered friends. Space is limited, and this opportunity is only available on a few select days—reserve your spot now by calling 619-718-3000 or online at sdzsafaripark.org/safari/
*additional cost for these passes
And if you want to save money, just visit the park early in the morning and during a weekday as mentioned. Head straight to the butterfly jungle. We made no lines at all during the week.
